Class Activity 1

Based on your reading, what are the main points you need to consider when designing print based marketing material? What would be your personal top 2 considerations and why?

Using Word to create marketing material

There are lots of different applications that you can use to help you design print based marketing materials. We will look at few over the coming weeks, but today we will look at one that is pretty much in everyone's arsenal - MS Word.

Using Templates

One of the easiest ways of creating print material with MS Word is to use a template. There are lots of different templates available for most types of marketing materials.

There are many templates that are freely available - either installed on your computer or that you can download and use from online resources.

The following screenshots show the templates that are available on my home installation of MS Word 2016. The templates available can vary depending on the version of MS Office installed.

By selecting a category, MS Word will search online for even more templates.

To use a template, double-click on the one you like and then click on the Create button.

Once your chosen template is loaded, you can customise it with your own images and text.

Online Templates from Office.com

https://templates.office.com/

I selected the Brochures category - underneath each template you will find the application name. Most of these are PowerPoint or Word.

You can download any template or you can open with Office 365 in your browser.

If using Office 365, remember that you don't have all of the features and the template may not display properly. If you have MS Office installed on your computer, I recommend downloading and using the application offline.

This is what a PowerPoint template looks like.

Class Activity 2

You need to create a flyer for one of the following activities for Mysty River Regional Library Service.
  •     General Come visit the library
  •     Opening of new branch
  •     Revamp of Mobile Library
  •     Story Time for Toddlers
View the templates from Office Online and select one that you like. Customise it for the event and share with the class via our Facebook group. Don't forget that you can get great quality images from pixabay or unsplash that do not require any attribution.

The easiest way to share is to grab a screenshot (Alt-Printscreen will capture the current window) and paste it into a post in (click to create a new post and Ctrl-V to paste the screen capture in as a photo)

Using the features of the Application

There are lots of features within Word that can be used when creating marketing materials

Add Text Boxes and/or Sidebars

Use Images or shapes

Shapes are a great way to add interest to your page. Shapes can be filled in with a range of colours or gradients, or can be filled with a texture image or a photo.

Images can be inserted on to a page, moved around, and have a variety of frames added for interest. You can even discard the background for added pizzazz.

Use Arrange to layer objects

Use Bullets

Tips for creating a tri-fold brochure

These tips are not too dissimilar to those for flyers/posters.

Before you start, I suggest getting an A4 piece of paper and decide how you might want to fold your brochure. Once you have decided how you will fold it, you can write Front, Back etc. Then unfold it so you can see which panel relates back to your document. You could also use this piece of paper to "sketch out" your brochure.

Start by loading Word with a Blank Document.

Change your Page layout to Landscape

In Page Layout, set your Margins to be Narrow and set your document to be 3 columns.

Insert Column breaks at the top of each column so that you can see your 6columns (3 columns each side of your page).

Put the information that you want on the relevant panels and the all you have to do is print it double-sided, which is the default within Chisholm.

With double sided printing, you can flip on the long edge or the short edge - which do you thing is relevant for this task??????

Class Activity 3

Using the same examples as Class Activity 2, create a tri-fold brochure for Mysty River Regional Library Service and share with your class mates.
